The Bennington Monument, dedicated to the famous Battle of Bennington that took place during the revolutionary war in 1777, is a 306' stone obelisk. It is located north of VT Route 9, about four miles east of the New York border. This is the only time during the year that the stairs are open to the public. The 438 steps of the monument are normally closed - the only way for the public to access the observation level at the top of the 306-foot obelisk is via the elevator - but participants will be given a rare opportunity to see this part of the structure. The steps are said to be based on a design by Michaelangelo, patterned after steps in the Farnese Palace in Rome. They are 18" wide and have a 4 1/2" rise and lead to a circular stairway that is the entrance to the observatory. At the top of the climb, you will experience spectacular views of historic Bennington and three states.
